Community Outreach

Soul Food for Your Baby exists to serve the African American community; thus, community outreach and education is an important part of what we do.

Nursing Meet Ups
SFYB holds at least two Nursing Meet Ups a year at a local restaurant in or near South Los Angeles. Pregnant and breastfeeding moms are invited so we can show that breastfeeding is accepted in the African American community. Small gift bags and prizes are usually part of the mix as moms socialize with each other and breastfeeding advocates in a relaxed environment. Please check the SFYB Calendar for the next Nursing Meet Up.

SFYB Collaborative
We encourage community-based representatives to participate in our Collaborative, which meets several times a year. The Collaborative plays an integral part in program development, focus group recruitment, outreach, collaboration, and publicity. If you would like to participate in the Collaborative, please contact Director Elizabeth Woods at

SFYB also arranges and participates in special events such as conferences and community fairs. Please check the SFYB Calendar for our next special event.

Riley High School
SFYB spearheaded the revitalization of a dilapidated lactation area at Riley High School, a school for pregnant and parenting girls in South Los Angeles. In collaboration with the SPA 5 & 6 Area Health Office and Watts WIC, the area was turned into an attractive pumping center for students. Many agencies and SFYB Facebook fans and Collaborative members donated items for this area. Please see the attachment for more photos.
